BMWi Window

The BMWi Window was designed to show passersby a view of the future. As pedestrians walked past the window they could see the street behind them reflected in it, but all the cars were changed to BMWi vehicles. Created in an empty storefront window on 6th avenue across from Bryant Park, the installation encouraged viewers to visit and extended the reach of the BMWi touring event.

To create the illusion we needed two 80,000 lumen projectors, a translucent projection screen over the glass, a camera to track the live traffic, a camera to recreate the background, and a sophisticated program to tie all the inputs and outputs together. The software tracked the cars by lanes, normalized their behavior, and allowed us to recreate the background to the minute.  By monitoring weather and sunrise service it was also able to activate rain and night simulations.

The experience was seen by over 100,000 people over the course of two weeks and the video has nearly half-a-million hits on Youtube.

The experience has been honored with One Show Interactive Gold Pencil, Cannes Innovation Shortlist, and Art Director's Club Silver Award. It was also featured in Creativity Mag's Pick of the Day and Google's Creative Sandbox.
